In a world that seems to constantly buzz with activity and connection, there are those who find solace in the quiet corners of existence.

In this week's video, I share the remarkable story of my 70-year-old friend, Maryruth who embarked on a journey of solitude and self-discovery, spending a decade living in a travel trailer on her own patch of land in the Arizona desert.

Battling with PTSD and a desire for respite from a world she found overwhelming, she coined the phrase,

"The World is too Peoplely!"

Her journey from isolation to reconnection is an inspiring testament to the human spirit's capacity to heal and thrive .

A Retreat into the Desert to a Journey of Strength and Renewal

Despite a her happy childhood, as an adult, after years of battling inner demons and the echoes of her adult traumatic past Maryruth found herself drawn to the vast deserts of Arizona, where she set up her travel trailer, determined to create a space for healing away from the bustling world. The story Maryruth shares in the video paints a picture of the healing power of nature and the freedom of the open road.

In today's article I share tips for overcoming isolation on the road.

Tips for Overcoming Isolation on the Road

1. Embrace Nature's Healing Embrace

Just like Maryruth found solace in nature, the beauty and tranquility of natural landscapes can provide a powerful backdrop for your self-reflection and healing.

2. Create a Safe Haven

Transform your living space – whether it's a room in your home, a van or a trailer – you can create a sanctuary that nurtures your mental well-being. Personalize it with items that bring you joy and comfort.

3. Reach Out to Kindred Spirits

While solitude has its benefits, connecting with like-minded individuals who share your lifestyle can be a source of encouragement and camaraderie.

Maryruth found like-minded people by joining the organization "Sisters On The Fly," a camping group for adventurous women.

Nomads Down the Road is another community Maryruth is a member of. It's free to join and connect with like-minded camping buddies and travel enthusiasts.

4. Engage in Mindfulness

Practice mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, to ground yourself in the present moment and ease feelings of isolation.

5. Pursue Creative Passions

Use your solitude to explore creative endeavors that ignite your passion. Whether it's writing, painting, or playing an instrument, creative outlets can provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

6. Gradual Reintegration

As you find healing, consider gradually reintegrating into social circles. Attend gatherings or events that align with your interests, giving you the chance to connect without feeling overwhelmed.

7. Seek Professional Support

If feelings of isolation become overwhelming or trigger mental health concerns, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Therapists and counselors can provide valuable guidance on your journey.
